This 'Cloud Rush' is creating a growing assortment of exciting new business opportunities for Cloud providers and users alike. It is also putting more power in the hands of the end-user and accelerating the "Consumerization of IT" which is changing the way purchase decisions are made and how tech solutions are designed.

 

But, it also poses important challenges for established vendors and enterprises attempting to determine where, when and how to capitalize on the rapidly evolving enabling technologies that are driving the Cloud Computing phenomenon.

Can You Profit from a Private Cloud?

 

With every new technology wave comes a new set of intrapreneurs who believe they can convert their internal skills into a commercial success.

 

We saw this in the 1970s with aerospace companies launching timeshare services in an attempt to resell their data center capabilities. It happened again in the 1980s when some tech companies thought they could become telecommunications service providers in the wake of the AT&T divestiture and industry deregulation. I even saw it during the dot.com era when I was a part of start-up which was spun out of the data center operations of a major financial institution to deliver managed services.

 

Today, we're seeing this pattern again as a growing number of enterprises are contemplating how they can emulate Amazon's success and build private Clouds which can be commercialized by selling Cloud services to others.
